Steven Grant Rogers is a former military officer who served as the first Captain America. A founding member of the Avengers, Rogers was the only subject of Project Rebirth and the first human to become an enhanced individual, receiving the Super Soldier Serum.

Raised in Brooklyn, Rogers enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. He was initially rejected for his physical build and health issues, but he was chosen by Abraham Erskine to become the subject of Project Rebirth, a government project to physically enhance soldiers. The Super Soldier Serum enhanced Rogers and his virtuous demeanor. Senator Brandt instructed Rogers to tour the United States as Captain America, producing military propaganda. After liberating Allied prisoners, he was invited to rejoin the Strategic Scientific Reserve, where he led the combat unit the Howling Commandos. Rogers led the Howling Commandos through several successful missions. He fought against Red Skull on the Valkyrie, ostensibly sacrificing his life to prevent Red Skull from decimating cities across the United States.

In 2011, Rogers was found unconscious in ice by S.H.I.E.L.D.. He was recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury to avert Loki's planned invasion of Earth. Rogers was among those selected for the Avengers Initiative. He commanded a counteroffensive during the Battle of New York, preventing the Chitauri invasion and defeating Loki. Rogers joined S.H.I.E.L.D. as a counter-terrorist operative, but discovered that Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. With Natasha Romanoff, Sam Wilson, and Maria Hill, he ended Project Insight, Hydra's attempt to assassinate threats to its mission. In the resulting war on Hydra, Rogers helped defeat Baron Strucker and later Ultron in the Battle of Sokovia.

During an assignment to kill Brock Rumlow, Wanda Maximoff accidentally detonated an explosive inside an office building in Lagos, killing 26 people. The attack was the impetus to the Sokovia Accords, mandating the United Nations hold authority over enhanced individuals. Rogers disagreed with the accords, publicly disagreeing with Tony Stark. During the ratification of the Sokovia Accords, Rogers' friend Bucky Barnes was framed by Helmut Zemo for a bombing that killed twelve people. Rogers confronted Stark in Berlin and later at the Siberian Hydra facility after Rogers defended Barnes for assassinating Stark's parents.

Rogers became a fugitive until the Infinity War, when Thanos waged an offensive to gather all six Infinity Stones. In the Battle of Wakanda, Rogers fought against Thanos, but he was defeated. Thanos perpetrated the Snap, eliminating half of all life in the universe.
