Thanos was a Titan warlord. Following the collapse of Titan, the planet he was born on, Thanos began a series of military campaigns, decimating populations. In 2018, he began a conflict for the Infinity Stones, obtaining all six stones and initiating the Snap.
Born in 1018, he was the son of A'Lars, the patriarch of the Titan royal family. He proposed eliminating half of all life on Titan to resolve the planet's overpopulation crisis, but his idea was deemed too radical and he was exiled. In an effort to prevent other planets from suffering the same fate as Titan, Thanos amassed an army of Chitauri, Sakaarans, and Outriders and formed a militant order known as the Children of Thanos. Thanos developed a ruthless and unyielding reputation as a warlord who massacred populations across planets, including the Zehoberei, where he found a young child named Gamora, later raising her.
By 2012, Thanos had begun to search for the Infinity Stones, six gems that could be used to eliminate half of all life in the universe. He obtained the Mind Stone and placed it within the Scepter. Thanos gave the Scepter and a Chitauri army to Loki in order to obtain the Space Stone from Earth. In exchange, Loki would rule Earth. The Chitauri invasion was stopped by the Avengers. In 2014, he tasked Ronan the Accuser with obtaining the Power Stone, contained within the Orb, but he was betrayed. In May 2018, Thanos began his conflict for the Infinity Stones, staging a massacre on the Xandarians for the Power Stone, an assault on the Asgardian spacecraft the Statesman to obtain the Space Stone, an attack on Taneleer Tivan's museum to obtain the Reality Stone. He sacrificed Gamora for the Soul Stone and obtained the Time Stone from Stephen Strange and the Mind Stone from Vision.
With the Infinity Stones, Thanos initiated the Snap with the Infinity Gauntlet, a consequential action that eliminated half of all life in the universe. After the Snap, he retired to the Garden, where he destroyed the Infinity Stones. The remaining Avengers visited the Garden and he was killed by Thor in a violent incident of rage. The effects of the Snap were reversed by the Blip in 2023, in which Bruce Banner used the Infinity Stones from previous points in time through the time heist to restore the individuals killed by Thanos in the Snap. Since his death, Thanos' actions have been viewed favorably by some on Earth.
