Raised in Brooklyn, Rogers enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. He was initially rejected for his physical build and health issues, but he was chosen by [[Abraham Erskine]] to become the subject of Project Rebirth, a government project to physically enhance soldiers. The Super Soldier Serumserum enhanced Rogers and his virtuous demeanor. [[Senator Brandt]] instructed Rogers to tour the United States as Captain America, producing military propaganda. After [[Liberation of the Austrian Hydra weapons facility|liberating]] Allied prisoners, he was invited to rejoin the [[Strategic Scientific Reserve]], where he led the combat unit the [[Howling Commandos]]. Rogers led the Howling Commandos through several successful missions. He [[Battle of the Valkyrie|fought]] against [[RedJohann SkullSchmidt]] on the ''[[Valkyrie (plane)|Valkyrie]]'', ostensibly sacrificing his life to prevent Red SkullSchmidt from decimating cities across the United States.
